Mac Q & A: Printing to a PDF file

March 21, 2010 by Mark Ratledge

My Mac Q & A Question: Do you know how I can print from Pages to a pdf file? I don’t want to have to buy Acrobat Pro just to do that. B.C., Missoula

Converting and printing to a pdf file is pretty much built-in to OS X. When you go to print, look in the print dialogue box. Most will have a drop down menu in the bottom left hand corner labeled “PDF.” Select that and you will see your options to print as a pdf, save as a pdf, email a pdf, and more. You can also preview your pdf before you print or save.

Also, check with Apple; they have a Knowledge Base article that lists all of the printer drives that are included with the different versions of OS X and that will print a pdf: Printer software included with Mac OS X

If you still don’t see the pdf options, check for a printer driver update from the manufacturer of the printer. You should be able to get the pdf functions with a driver update.
